Missed the January 10 One-Stop Deadline? What to Do Next (2027)

Missing the January 10 one-stop deadline doesn’t mean you lose your deduction. You can still claim it on a tax return (kakutei shinkoku) by March 15. Include every furusato nozei donation from that year, not just the late ones. You also need your donation receipts.

Key facts (as of October 2026)

  • One-stop deadline: The form must arrive by January 10 of the year after you donate. (Takasaki City)
  • Your next route: A tax return, filed by March 15. (MIC)
  • What to include: All donations from that year, even ones with one-stop forms. (Nagaoka City)
  • What you need: Donation receipts, or an annual certificate. (NTA)

Is your deduction lost?

No. The tax return is the standard way to claim furusato nozei. The one-stop exception (one-stop tokurei, ワンストップ特例) is a shortcut for people who qualify. (MIC)

Nagaoka City says the same. If you can’t use the one-stop exception, you claim the deduction on a tax return or resident tax return. (Nagaoka City)

How it comes backLower resident tax from JuneIncome tax refund, plus lower resident tax from June

In most cases, the total deduction is the same with either method. (Takasaki City)

Why must you include every donation?

The one-stop exception works for all your donations or none of them. When you file a tax return, your one-stop applications become invalid. (NTA)

So if you sent four forms on time and missed one, the four on-time forms stop counting too. Put all five donations on the tax return. (Nagaoka City)

Your situationWhat to put on the tax return
Missed the deadline for one municipalityAll donations from that year
Missed every formAll donations from that year
Donated on several portalsAll donations, from every portal

If you leave out the on-time donations, you lose their deduction on the return. The NTA says a request for correction (kosei no seikyu, 更正の請求) can fix this later. (NTA)

What should you do now?

Follow these steps in order. Most people can finish them in February and early March.

  1. List every donation. Check your order history on each portal. Note the date, municipality, and amount for each one.
  2. Gather your receipts. Match one or more receipts (寄附金受領証明書) to every municipality on your list.
  3. Chase missing receipts. Contact the municipality directly. (Rakuten)
  4. Check for an annual certificate. Some portals offer one certificate for the year. You can attach it instead of receipts. (NTA)
  5. Get your withholding slip. Your employer gives you the gensen choshuhyo (源泉徴収票). (Mutsu City)
  6. File by March 15. Use e-Tax, mail, or your local tax office. (NTA)

For the filing steps, see How to Claim Furusato Nozei on Your Tax Return.

When can you file?

The filing period is usually February 16 to March 15 of the next year. (NTA) For 2026 donations, the deadline is March 15, 2027.

March 15, 2027Tax return deadline
From June 2027Lower resident tax starts

What do you write on the tax return?

Write your donations in two sections of form 2 (第二表). The NTA asks you to fill in both. (NTA)

  • 寄附金控除に関する事項: each municipality’s name and the amount
  • 住民税に関する事項, line 都道府県、市区町村への寄附(特例控除対象): the furusato nozei amount

If the resident tax line is empty, your resident tax deduction may not be applied. (NTA) The NTA’s online tax return corner asks for these on screen.

What was the cause, and how do you avoid it next year?

Most misses come from timing. Find your cause in the table, then plan next year around it.

Common causeWhat to try next year
The form arrived late from a December donationDonate earlier in the year. Download the form or apply online if offered.
Mail was slow over the holidaysMail each form as soon as it arrives

Japan’s year-end holidays fall between late December and January 10. Mail and city offices may be slower then. This is general advice, so leave extra time.

Some municipalities accept online one-stop applications with a My Number Card. Each municipality decides which services it accepts. (Mutsu City) For December planning, see Furusato Nozei Deadline.

FAQ

Can I still mail the one-stop form after January 10?

The deadline is January 10. (Takasaki City) After that, claim the deduction on a tax return instead.

Do I only need to file the donation I missed?

No. Filing makes all your one-stop applications invalid. Include every donation from that year. (NTA)

Will I get less money back with a tax return?

In most cases, no. The total is usually the same. Part comes as an income tax refund instead of resident tax. (Takasaki City)

I threw away a receipt. What can I do?

Contact the municipality and ask how to get proof of the donation. An annual certificate from your portal may also work. (NTA)

I also missed March 15. Is it too late?

This guide doesn’t cover late filing. Contact your local tax office or a tax accountant.

Should I tell the municipality I’m filing instead?

You don’t need to send one-stop forms when you file a tax return. (Mutsu City) If you have questions about a form you already sent, contact that municipality.
