If your deduction limit is large, the best furusato nozei gifts are the ones you will actually use. Think travel and experiences, premium food spread over regular deliveries, and a few durable items. Spending a ¥500,000 limit on frozen beef alone fills your freezer, not your life. This guide shows how high earners in Japan plan a large limit. It also covers one tax rule that matters if your salary is over ¥20 million.
Key facts (as of October 2026)
- Cost: ¥2,000 a year, as long as your donations stay within your limit.
- Gift value: A municipality can spend up to 30% of your donation on the gift.
- Salary over ¥20 million: You must file a tax return, so you can’t use the one-stop exception. (NTA)
- One-stop exception: Only if you don’t need a tax return and donate to 5 municipalities or fewer.
How large is a “large” deduction limit?
Your limit grows with your income, because one part of the deduction is capped at 20% of your resident tax. Higher income means higher resident tax, so the cap is higher too. (MIC)
In this guide, we group limits into three bands. Find your own limit first with Rakuten’s free simulator (in Japanese) or Furusato Nozei Limit.
| Your limit | What it usually means for planning |
|---|---|
| ¥200,000 to ¥400,000 | You can mix one travel or experience gift with food and regular deliveries |
| ¥400,000 to ¥800,000 | You need a plan, or you will run out of freezer space and time |
| ¥800,000 or more | Think in terms of a few large gifts and a yearly schedule |
Do you need to file a tax return?
If your annual salary is more than ¥20 million, yes. The National Tax Agency requires a tax return from anyone with a salary over ¥20 million. The one-stop exception is not an option for you. (NTA)
You also need to file if your income other than salary is more than ¥200,000. The same applies if your employer doesn’t withhold Japanese tax. (NTA)
Filing a tax return has one advantage for high earners. The 5-municipality limit only applies to the one-stop exception. With a tax return, you can donate to as many municipalities as you like. (MIC)
| Your situation | How you claim | How many municipalities |
|---|---|---|
| Salary ¥20 million or less, no other filing reason | One-stop exception or tax return | Up to 5 with one-stop, any number with a tax return |
| Salary over ¥20 million | Tax return | Any number |
| Income other than salary over ¥200,000 | Tax return | Any number |
Keep every donation receipt. You attach them to your tax return. (MIC)
Which gift types work best for a large limit?
Six gift types fit high earners well. Each solves a different problem.
| Gift type | Why it suits a large limit | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Travel vouchers and hotel stays | Uses a large amount in one donation, with no storage | Expiry dates, blackout dates, and where you can use them |
| Experiences (ski, golf, crafts) | Memorable, and often only available through furusato nozei | Booking rules and language support |
| Regular deliveries (teikibin, 定期便) | Spreads food across the year, so it fits your freezer | Delivery schedule and changes of address |
| Premium food (wagyu, crab, sea urchin) | Easy to choose, high satisfaction | Freezer space and delivery dates |
| Appliances and crafts | Durable, and you use them for years | The new local-product rules, and repair support |
| Everyday staples (rice, water, paper goods) | Replaces things you buy anyway | Storage space |
The rest of this guide covers each type in more detail.
Travel vouchers and hotel stays
Travel gifts use a large part of your limit in one donation and need no freezer space. They suit people who travel in Japan a few times a year.
Before you donate, check these points on the gift page:
- Where you can use it. Most vouchers work only in that municipality.
- How long it lasts. Check the expiry date against your travel plans.
- How you book. Some require phone booking in Japanese.

Rules for lodging and travel gifts are stricter now. A lodging gift must be at a local hotel run by an operator based only in that prefecture, not an outside chain brand. The municipality’s cost can’t exceed ¥50,000 per person per night. Travel vouchers not tied to one hotel must limit lodging use to that amount. (MIC) Gifts that exist today may change next year. See Furusato Nozei Changes 2025–2027.

Experiences you can’t easily buy elsewhere
Some municipalities offer experiences as gifts, such as ski lessons, golf rounds, or craft workshops. They are a good way to use a large limit on something memorable.
Language is the main issue. Ask the municipality or provider whether English support is available before you donate.

Regular deliveries spread across the year
A regular delivery gift (teikibin, 定期便) sends food several times over months. For example, rice every month, or fruit in each season. It’s the easiest way to use a large limit without filling your freezer at once.
| Good for | Not good for |
|---|---|
| Families who eat rice or fruit every week | People who travel a lot or may move soon |
| People with little freezer space | People who want everything this year |
If you move during the delivery period, contact the municipality or portal to change the address. The steps differ by gift.

Premium food: wagyu, seafood, and fruit
Premium food is the most popular choice. Plan delivery dates so you aren’t storing large frozen boxes at once.
- Wagyu. Choose cuts you will cook. Sliced beef for sukiyaki and shabu-shabu is easier than large steaks for many households. See Best Wagyu Return Gifts.
- Seafood. Crab and scallops are popular in winter. Check the delivery window before you donate.
- Fruit. Fruit ships in season, which can be months after you donate.

Appliances and crafts
Durable items are a good way to use a large limit on something you’ll keep. Popular choices include kitchen appliances, knives, and lacquerware.
The October 2026 rules require municipalities to publish how much of a processed product’s value was created locally. Appliances made mostly elsewhere may disappear from portals. (MIC) See Home Appliances and Crafts.

What about gold and jewelry?
Gold and jewelry gifts exist, mainly from areas with a local jewelry or metal-working industry. They attract high earners because one gift can use a large amount. Like other processed products, more than half of the value must be created in the area. (MIC)
These gifts are most affected by the local-product rules. Check that the gift page explains the local processing, and expect availability to change. Browse local jewelry on Rakuten Furusato Nozei or Amazon Furusato Nozei (in Japanese).
Everyday staples
Rice, bottled water, and paper goods replace things you’d buy anyway. They are not exciting, but they turn your limit into real savings on your monthly budget.

Sample plans for a large limit
These plans show how to split a limit across gift types. They are examples, not recommendations for your situation. Check your own limit first.
| Gift type | ¥300,000 limit | ¥600,000 limit | ¥1,000,000 limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel or experience | ¥100,000 | ¥200,000 | ¥350,000 |
| Regular deliveries | ¥80,000 | ¥150,000 | ¥200,000 |
| Premium food | ¥70,000 | ¥120,000 | ¥200,000 |
| Appliance or craft | ¥0 | ¥80,000 | ¥150,000 |
| Everyday staples | ¥50,000 | ¥50,000 | ¥100,000 |
| Municipalities used | 4 to 5 | 5 to 8 | 8 or more |
With the one-stop exception, you can use only 5 municipalities. If your plan uses more, you will need a tax return. Several donations to the same municipality count as one. (Takasaki City)

Sample plans, not recommendations. Each bar is the whole limit.
More than 5 municipalities means you need a tax return instead of the one-stop exception. As of October 2026.
What should you check before a high-value donation?
High-value gifts have more ways to go wrong. Check these before you pay.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Your limit, after bonuses and RSUs | Going over the limit costs you real money |
| Delivery date | Large frozen boxes need free freezer space on that day |
| Expiry and booking rules | Travel vouchers and experiences can expire unused |
| Delivery area | Some gifts can’t be delivered to all areas |
| Cancellation rules | Check the portal’s cancellation policy before you pay |
| Name and address | They must match your resident registration |
What mistakes do high earners make?
- Donating before the bonus is known. If your income ends up lower than expected, your limit is lower too. Wait until you know your income, or donate in two rounds.
- Using the one-stop exception with a salary over ¥20 million. You must file a tax return, so the one-stop forms don’t help you.
- Forgetting the 5-municipality limit. If you qualify for one-stop, plan larger donations to fewer municipalities.
- Ordering everything in December. Popular gifts sell out, and frozen deliveries arrive at the same time.
What should you do next?
- Check your limit, including bonuses and RSUs.
- Decide whether you will file a tax return.
- Split your limit across two or three gift types.
FAQ
What is the best furusato nozei gift for a large limit?
There is no single best gift. For a large limit, a mix works better: one travel or experience gift, a regular delivery, and some premium food.
Can I donate to more than 5 municipalities?
Yes, if you file a tax return. The 5-municipality limit only applies to the one-stop exception.
My salary is over ¥20 million. Can I still use furusato nozei?
Yes. You claim the deduction on your tax return instead of using the one-stop exception.
Does the ¥1.93 million cap from 2027 affect me?
Probably not. MIC says the cap is reached at a salary of about ¥100 million. (MIC)
Are travel vouchers worth it?
They are if you will use them before they expire. Check where you can use them and how to book before you donate.
