Travel gifts turn your furusato nozei donation into a trip. You donate to a municipality, and it sends you a voucher for hotels, ryokan, or tours in that area. They suit people with a medium or large limit who travel in Japan. The catch is that most vouchers work only in that one municipality and expire.
Key facts (as of October 2026)
- Gift value: The municipality can spend up to 30% of your donation on the gift. (MIC)
- Where you can use it: Usually only in the municipality you donate to. Check the gift page.
- Expiry: Vouchers have an expiry date. Check the gift page for the date and what happens after it.
- Salary over ¥20 million: You must file a tax return, so the one-stop exception is not an option. (NTA)
What kinds of travel gifts are there?
There are four main types. They differ in where you can use them and how you book.
| Type | Japanese | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel vouchers | 旅行券 | Paper or digital vouchers for hotels, tours, or shops in the area | Flexible trips |
| Hotel or ryokan stay vouchers | 宿泊券 | A stay at one named hotel or ryokan | A specific place you want to visit |
| Portal travel coupons | 旅行クーポン | A coupon used on a travel booking site for stays in the area | People who book online |
| Experiences | 体験 | Activities such as skiing, golf, or crafts | Something memorable |
Portal travel coupons work differently on each portal and for each gift. Before you donate, check the gift page for how you receive the coupon, where you can use it, and when it expires.
Some vouchers can also be used at local restaurants or shops. Others work only at one hotel. The gift page lists where you can use it.
How do travel vouchers work?
You donate, receive the voucher, then book your stay. The steps are simple, but each step has rules.
- Donate. Choose the gift on a portal or the municipality’s site.
- Receive the voucher. Paper vouchers come by mail. Digital ones come by email or in an app. The gift page shows when it will arrive.
- Book the stay. Some hotels take online bookings. Others take phone bookings in Japanese only.
- Use the voucher. Show it at check-in or enter a code when you book.
Three rules matter most:
- Area. Most vouchers work only in the municipality you donate to.
- Expiry. Check the expiry date against your travel plans.
- Change. Check the gift page to see if you get change when you spend less than the face value.
How can you check English support?
Check before you donate, because a voucher is hard to use if you can’t book. English support depends on each hotel or provider.
| Check | How to check |
|---|---|
| Booking language | Look for an English booking page on the hotel’s own site |
| Phone booking only | If the gift page says 電話予約, booking may be in Japanese only |
| Staff language | Ask the hotel by email before you donate |
| Rules in English | Most voucher rules are in Japanese. Use a translation app on the gift page. |
If you’re unsure, contact the municipality. Many have an email address on the gift page.
How do you pick a region and season?
Pick a place you already want to visit. Then match the season to what the area is known for.
| Season | Popular ideas |
|---|---|
| Winter | Ski areas, hot spring towns, snow festivals |
| Spring | Cherry blossom areas |
| Summer | Beaches, islands, cooler mountain towns |
| Autumn | Autumn leaves, hot spring towns |
Popular areas get busy in peak seasons. Check the gift page for dates when the voucher can’t be used, such as New Year.
Also think about travel cost. The voucher covers the stay, but you still pay for trains and flights.

Is a ryokan stay a good use of your limit?
Yes, if you want a traditional Japanese stay. A ryokan (旅館) is a Japanese-style inn, often with a hot spring bath and dinner.
| Good points | Things to consider |
|---|---|
| Uses a large amount in one donation | You must travel to that town |
| No freezer or storage needed | Booking may be in Japanese |
| A memorable trip | Dates may be limited |
Check what the stay includes. Some include dinner and breakfast, while others include the room only. Check whether the voucher covers one person or two.

How do you use a large limit on travel?
Travel is one of the easiest ways to use a large limit. One donation can cover a hotel stay for a family.
A few tips:
- Split across trips. Choose two areas instead of one large voucher you may not use up.
- Mix gift types. Combine travel with food or regular deliveries.
- Check the municipality count. With the one-stop exception, you can use up to 5 municipalities. (MIC)

What about experience gifts?
Experience gifts include ski passes, golf rounds, craft workshops, and guided tours. They are a good fit if you want an activity, not a hotel.
Language matters even more here. A guided tour or workshop is usually in Japanese. Ask the provider about English support before you donate.

Have the rules for travel gifts changed?
Yes. In June 2024, the government said it would review the rules for stays and other services in the municipality. The review puts more weight on value created locally and on links to the area. (MIC)
Under the current rules, a travel voucher that doesn’t name a hotel must limit stays to ¥50,000 or less per person per night. This includes meals. (MIC) A hotel voucher that can also buy goods made outside the area is not allowed. (MIC) Gifts that exist today may change next year.
All gifts must follow two basic rules. The municipality can spend up to 30% of your donation on the gift, and the gift must count as a local product. (MIC)
Since October 1, 2025, municipalities can’t collect donations through portals that give points. (MIC) Read more in Furusato Nozei Changes 2025–2027.
How do you claim the tax deduction?
You claim it the same way as for any other gift. There are two ways.
| Way | Who can use it | Key deadline |
|---|---|---|
| One-stop exception | You don’t need a tax return, and you donate to 5 municipalities or fewer | Form arrives by January 10 of the next year |
| Tax return (kakutei shinkoku) | Anyone. Required if you must file for other reasons | March 15 of the next year |
Sources: MIC, Takasaki City
If your annual salary is over ¥20 million, you must file a tax return. The one-stop forms won’t work for you. (NTA)
With the one-stop exception, send one form for each donation. See One-Stop Exception Form in English.
How do you search for travel gifts on a Japanese portal?
Search with Japanese words. English searches find few gifts.
| You want | Search for | How to say it |
|---|---|---|
Combine a place name with these words, such as 箱根 宿泊券. For a step-by-step portal guide, see How to Use Rakuten Furusato Nozei in English.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Letting a voucher expire. Plan your trip before you donate.
- Choosing a place you won’t visit. A cheap-looking voucher is worth nothing if unused.
- Missing peak-season limits. Check which dates are excluded.
- Not checking the booking method. Phone-only booking may be in Japanese.
- Going over your limit. Travel gifts need large donations. Check your limit with Rakuten’s free simulator (in Japanese).
What should you do next?
- Check your deduction limit.
- Pick one or two places you want to visit in the next year.
- Check the expiry, booking method, and English support before you donate.
FAQ
Can I use a travel voucher anywhere in Japan?
Usually not. Most vouchers work only in the municipality you donate to. Check the list of places on the gift page.
What happens if my voucher expires?
Check the gift page before you donate. It should explain the expiry date and what happens after it. Your tax deduction depends on your donation, not on using the voucher.
Can I give a travel voucher to a friend?
It depends on the voucher. Check the gift page for who can use it, or ask the municipality before you donate.
Can I book a ryokan in English?
Some ryokan take bookings in English, but many don’t. Check the hotel’s website or ask by email before you donate.
My salary is over ¥20 million. Can I still get travel gifts?
Yes. You claim the deduction on your tax return instead of using the one-stop exception. (NTA)
Are travel gifts better than food gifts?
Neither is better for everyone. Travel suits people who travel in Japan and have a larger limit. Food suits people who want something without planning a trip.
